Noosa national park occupies a four-hundred-hectare headland between the town and the sea. The coastal path runs five and a half kilometres to Hell's Gates, following the cliff above a chain of coves.

It is one of the most reliable places in Australia to see wild koalas: a small population lives in the eucalypts along the Tanglewood track, and the rangers mark the occupied trees. Dolphins pass offshore regularly, and humpback whales between June and November.

Getting there

Entrance at the end of Hastings Street, Noosa Heads. The coastal path starts at the visitor centre.

What to bring

Rules on site

Koalas sleep twenty hours a day, high in the trees: look for a grey mass in a fork, and do not expect movement. The park's coves are unpatrolled and the currents there are strong.
