Main Beach is one of the few beaches on Australia's east coast to face north: it is sheltered by the national park headland, which puts it out of the south-easterly swell and makes it one of the calmest beaches in the region.
Hastings Street, which runs behind it, has a regulatory peculiarity: building height has been capped at the height of the tree canopy since the 1980s, following a residents' campaign. That is what distinguishes Noosa from the Gold Coast and its wall of towers.
Getting there
In the middle of Noosa Heads. The national park begins at the eastern end of the street.
What to bring
- Swimsuit
Rules on site
Parking in Noosa Heads is very limited and paid: park at Noosa Junction and walk down or take the shuttle. Swim between the flags, even when the sea looks calm.
