The Warsaw Uprising began on 1 August 1944 and lasted sixty-three days. The Polish Home Army took control of much of the city while waiting for the Red Army, which had stopped on the far bank of the Vistula and did not intervene. Around a hundred and fifty thousand civilians were killed.
The museum occupies a former power station and is built as an immersion rather than a collection: the heartbeat you hear on entering, the reconstructed streets, a sewer to walk through — the insurgents moved through the sewers. An aerial reconnaissance film shows the city flattened in 1945.
