Mount Tapyas rises two hundred and ten metres above Coron town, and a concrete stairway of seven hundred and twenty-one steps climbs straight up from the last houses. The landings are numbered every hundred, which either helps or discourages depending on the moment.
At the top, a large cross lit at night, and a terrace taking in Coron bay: the limestone islets, Busuanga island, and in clear weather the outlines of the Japanese wrecks breaking the surface. The climb takes twenty to thirty minutes.
Getting there
The stairway starts at the end of Don Pedro street, in Coron town. Ten minutes on foot from the market.
Rules on site
The stairway is in full sun for the first half with no water point: don't climb it in the middle of the day. Coming down at night is done by phone light — not all the lamps work.
