In short

In September 1944, American aircraft sank a Japanese fleet in Coron Bay. A dozen wrecks lie between twelve and forty metres, which makes this one of the best accessible wreck-diving sites in the world.

Kayangan Lake, ringed by limestone cliffs, is billed as the cleanest in the Philippines. It is reached by a steep staircase from the landing stage.

What it really costs

Coron is cheap but everything happens by boat, and transport is the dominant item. Day trips group several sites together.

Each site has its own entry fee, collected by the local community and paid in cash on the spot. They add up fast and are not always included in the trip price.

What nobody tells you

Coron and El Nido are on different islands, several hours apart by ferry or a flight. Many travellers find out late that they cannot be chained in a morning.

Cash machines are scarce and break down. You arrive with cash, and many places to stay do not take cards.

Typhoon season runs from June to November. Flights to Busuanga are cancelled regularly, and there is no backup road.

    Kayangan Lake

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

Fresh and salt water in layers inside a limestone bowl, two hundred steps up.

The lake is the first stop on every trip and it is empty before eight: ask your boat to start there — most schedule it mid-morning, when three hundred people are crossing on the steps.

entry fee collected by the Tagbanua community, rate to be checked; it comes on top of the boat trip

    Mount Tapyas

    Free

Seven hundred and twenty-one steps above town, and the whole limestone bay.

Climb an hour before sunset and come down after: it is free, it is the best view of the archipelago, and the sunset boat trips cost a whole day's budget for less.
