Mount Srđ rises four hundred and twelve metres above the town. The Imperial Fort at its summit was built by the French under Napoleon in 1810; it served as a Croatian defensive position during the siege of 1991-92, and now houses a museum of the war of independence.
The cable car goes up in four minutes. A zigzag path, the Serpentine, does the same in an hour of steady climbing, free of charge, but it is entirely exposed to the sun.
Getting there
Cable car base station just north of Ploče Gate, five minutes from the old town. The Serpentine path starts from the same place.
