Fløyen tops out three hundred and twenty metres above the centre and the funicular climbs it in eight minutes, as it has since 1918. It is daily transport as much as an attraction: people live up there.
From the terrace you see the seven mountains that enclose Bergen, the harbour and the mouth of the fjords. The real interest is behind: tens of kilometres of marked trails leave the summit for the lakes and the forest, and the walk down to town takes forty-five minutes.
Getting there
Funicular base station at Vetrlidsallmenningen, five minutes from the fish market. A path climbs on foot in forty-five minutes.
What the price covers
the funicular is ticketed; the walking path from the centre is free
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The summit is often in cloud even when the town is clear: check the webcam before paying. Walking down is free and avoids the return queue, which is long late in the day.
