The market has stood on this quay since the 1200s, at the exact point where the boats unloaded. It has changed: the covered hall, opened in 2012, replaced much of the open-air stalls, and the whole thing now caters mostly to visitors.
You eat standing: salmon, king crab, fjord prawns. Prices are high and quoted by weight, which surprises people at the till: ask for the total in kroner before the plate is made up.
Getting there
At the head of the Vågen, in central Bergen, facing Bryggen. The covered hall is open all year; the outdoor stalls mostly in summer.
Rules on site
Prices are by weight and climb fast: ask for the total before anything is served. King crab is the priciest item and the least legible on the label.
