The Mirador de los Cóndores is El Chaltén's short walk: an hour return from the village on an even path, with Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre opposite and the Río de las Vueltas valley below.
It is the first trail to do on arrival — it lays out the geography of the massif in an hour and lets you judge the weather for the days ahead. The condors it is named after use the updraughts off the cliff, and you see them pass at eye level.
Getting there
Starts behind the park visitor centre, at the entrance to the village. The path is short and waymarked.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Sportswear
Rules on site
The lookout is exposed and the wind there is very strong: take care near the edge, there is no railing. The visitor centre posts the day's forecast — check it before any other hike.
