Mindil Beach market is held on Thursday and Sunday evenings during the dry season, April to October. It does not exist the rest of the year: the monsoon makes the ground unusable.
What marks it out is the mix of stalls, which says everything about Darwin's geography: the city is closer to Jakarta than to Sydney, and you eat Indonesian, Thai, Timorese and Malay as much as Australian. The ritual is to take your plate onto the sand for the sunset over the Timor Sea, which drops straight down the axis.
Getting there
Mindil Beach, two kilometres from central Darwin. Bus, or twenty minutes on foot through the Botanic Gardens.
Hours
Thursday and Sunday evenings, April to October only
Rules on site
The market only runs April to October, on Thursdays and Sundays: out of season there is nothing. Do not swim at Mindil — irukandji jellyfish from October to May, and saltwater crocodiles all year.
