Maboneng — 'place of light' in Sotho — is a group of industrial warehouses in the lower city, taken over from 2008 by a developer who bought building by building to install galleries, studios, flats and restaurants.

It is one of the few parts of central Johannesburg where you walk. The Sunday market at Arts on Main, in a former foundry, brings together food stalls and designers. The district has had financial trouble and its safe perimeter is narrow: it stops after a few streets, and the boundary is not signposted.

Getting there

Fox Street, in the lower city. Arrive by taxi or ride-hail: there is no walking route from other districts.

Rules on site

The walkable area is only a few streets and the boundary is unmarked: do not stray from Fox Street and its immediate surrounds. Arrive and leave by vehicle, including in daylight.
