The museum opened in 2001 and its first decision is physical: your ticket randomly assigns you an entrance, 'white' or 'non-white', and you go through the matching gate. The two corridors stay separate for a while, with different documents, before rejoining.
The route then follows the history of the system, from its imposition in 1948 to the first free elections of 1994, with police archives, film, and a room of a hundred and thirty-one nooses for the hundred and thirty-one opponents who died in detention. Allow three hours: it is dense, and you do not come out unaffected.
Getting there
Northern Parkway, Ormonde, eight kilometres south-west of the centre. Taxi or car: there is no practical pedestrian access.

Rules on site
Closed on Monday. The content is hard and documented without softening: it is not suitable for young children. Allow three full hours — leaving early is awkward once you are into the route.
