A carved red timber staircase under stained glass, in ten square metres of neo-Gothic.

Entry price
15.95 EUR
The bookshop opened in 1906, in a neo-Gothic interior designed for a tiny space. Its curving red staircase is not fine timber but painted plaster, which is what made carving it affordable at that price; the ceiling's stained glass carries the firm's motto.
The crowds came with the widely repeated legend that Rowling drew on it for Hogwarts — the shop has never confirmed it. A timed ticket is now required, and it is deducted from the price of a book.
Getting there
Rua das Carmelitas, two minutes from the Clérigos tower. Metro at São Bento or Aliados, ten minutes on foot.
What the price covers
a ticket-voucher, self-guided visit: the 15.95 € becomes credit towards a book from Lello's own editions. A combined ticket with the Lello Foundation, at the Leça do Balio monastery, is 29.95 €.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The ticket is timed and bought online or at the nearby office, never at the door. The interior is a few dozen square metres: when full you shuffle, and the visit lasts ten minutes.
