The tower was finished in 1763 to designs by Nicolau Nasoni, an Italian settled in Porto, and it long remained the tallest building in Portugal. It served as a landmark for boats coming up the Douro.
Two hundred and forty spiral steps climb to seventy-five metres. At the top the platform runs right round and gives the one viewpoint that takes in the tiled roofs, the river and the Gaia lodges at once.
Getting there
Rua de São Filipe de Nery, five minutes on foot from São Bento station. The ticket covers the church, the museum and the tower.
Hours
9am – 7pm, every day
What the price covers
the tower and the Clérigos museum. 7 € for students on production of a card, free under 10.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The staircase is narrow, two-way and done against the flow: there is no lift, and the climb is hard on weak knees. Sunset slots are booked online and go in advance.
