The painter Jacques Majorelle began this garden in 1923 and spent forty years on it, bringing back plants from his travels — cacti, bamboo, palms, water lilies. The ultramarine he painted the villa and the pots is a colour he registered: Majorelle blue.
After his death the garden decayed and a hotel scheme threatened the land. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought it in 1980 and restored it; Saint Laurent's ashes were scattered here in 2008. The Berber museum occupies the old studio.
