The Duomo took nearly six centuries, from 1386 to 1965 for the last door. It is built of Candoglia marble, from a quarry Gian Galeazzo Visconti gave to the cathedral in 1387 — it still belongs to the works office, and marble still comes out of it for restoration.
It has three thousand four hundred statues and a hundred and thirty-five spires. The distinctive thing is elsewhere: you walk on the roof. Stairs or a lift reach the terraces, and you move among the flying buttresses and the pinnacles, level with the sculpture.
