The Monumental Cemetery opened in 1866 and works as a permanent exhibition of sculpture: Milan's great industrial families had chapels and monuments built here by the leading sculptors and architects of their day, from nineteenth-century eclecticism to 1930s rationalism.
There is a bronze reproduction of the Last Supper, obelisks, Greek temples and a memorial to the Milanese deported and killed in the camps. Entry is free and a map of the notable tombs is given out at the gate.
Getting there
Piazzale Cimitero Monumentale. Metro line 5, Monumentale station, or trams 2, 4 and 12.
