The Tjibaou cultural centre opened in 1998, four years after the assassination of Jean-Marie Tjibaou, the Kanak independence leader whose name it carries. It was written into the Matignon Accords as a commitment by the French state to Kanak culture.
Renzo Piano designed ten cases of laminated timber and stainless steel, of differing sizes, ranged along a ridge. They are deliberately left unfinished at the top — a reference to the Kanak hut under construction — and their double skin of slats works as a natural ventilation system tuned to the trade winds.
