The cathedral was raised from 1401 on the site of the great Almohad mosque, with the declared intention of building something that would have people think its builders mad. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world by volume, and it holds the tomb of Christopher Columbus, carried by four kings.
The Giralda is the old minaret, kept and capped with a Renaissance belfry. You climb it by thirty-four ramps rather than steps: they were made so a rider could go up on horseback.
Getting there
Avenida de la Constitución, tram T1, Archivo de Indias stop. The visitor entrance is the Puerta del Príncipe, not the Door of Forgiveness.
What the price covers
cultural visit to the cathedral and Giralda, online; €14 at the door, €7 reduced. Allow 75 minutes.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
Opening hours shift with services, and Holy Week closes almost everything: check on the day. The Giralda climb has no lift and the shaft is very hot in summer.
