Promthep is the southernmost point of Phuket, a headland of cropped grass with a lighthouse and a row of votive elephants. It is the island's official sunset spot, and it is treated as one: the coaches arrive an hour before and leave ten minutes after.
The view runs out to the Koh Kaeo islets and, on a clear day, to the open Andaman Sea. The small path dropping to the right of the car park leads to a lower platform that is almost always empty.
Getting there
Three kilometres of coast road from Rawai. The car park fills forty minutes before sunset and empties all at once afterwards.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Headlamp
- International driving permit
Rules on site
Leaving the car park after sunset means a fifteen-minute jam. On a scooter the descent is in the dark, with no street lighting.
