In short

Phuket is not a postcard island: it is a city of several hundred thousand people, with an international airport, hospitals at Western standards, and schools.

That changes everything for a long stay. You live here year-round without ever depending on a ferry.

What it really costs

The gap between districts is enormous. Rawai and Chalong stay affordable, Patong and Bang Tao charge European prices.

Transport is the black spot: little public transport, expensive taxis, and a scooter quickly becomes essential.

When to go

From November to March the west coast is calm and sunny. From May to October the swell makes swimming dangerous on several beaches — the red flags are there to be obeyed.

Low season halves the rents.

What nobody tells you

Drownings are frequent in the monsoon, and lifeguards are not everywhere.

Scooter rental is a classic trap: invented damage on return, passport held as deposit. Photograph everything, and never leave your passport.

Visa

Short stay

Visa exemption for French citizens, extendable once on arrival.

Long stay

DTV visa for remote work, business visas depending on the structure.

  • Phuket Old Town

    must-seeFree

The pastel Sino-Portuguese fronts of Thalang Road, far from the beaches.

The Sunday evening street market closes the road to traffic. It is the one thing on the island that was not built for visitors.

  • Big Buddha

    must-seeFree

Forty-five metres of white marble on top of Nakkerd hill.

Come at first light: the marble has not heated up, mist still sits in Chalong bay and the wind has dropped. The engraved marble tile, a few hundred baht, is the only thing to buy here — the building work has run on those donations alone since 2004.

  • Promthep Cape

    must-seeFree

The island's southern tip, and the sunset everyone comes for.

The path down to the right of the car park reaches a low platform in five minutes, almost always empty, with the same horizon. And don't leave with everyone else: wait twenty minutes and the car-park jam has cleared itself.
