Borobudur was built around 800 under the Sailendra dynasty, then abandoned and buried under volcanic ash and jungle for centuries before being cleared from 1814. It is a mandala in stone: nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, climbed clockwise.

The galleries carry two thousand six hundred reliefs that read like a book as you walk, and the upper platforms fifty-two pierced stupas each holding a seated Buddha. Since 2023 the number of visitors allowed to climb is capped and fibre sandals are compulsory, to slow the wear on the steps.

Getting there

Forty kilometres north-west of Yogyakarta, an hour by road. Regular shuttles from Jombor terminal.

What the price covers

paid entry, with a foreign rate distinct from the Indonesian one; climbing onto the platforms is booked separately and by time slot

Rules on site

The park ticket and the slot to climb the monument are two different things: without the second you stay at the base. Slots are capped and booked ahead.
