In short

Yogyakarta is the only sultanate still recognised in Indonesia, with its own administrative status. The kraton, the sultan's palace, is still lived in and can be visited.

Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and Prambanan, Java's great Hindu complex, are less than an hour away. Both are World Heritage sites.

What it really costs

This is one of the cheapest cities in Indonesia, far below Bali. Its student population keeps cheap housing and eating options alive.

Warungs serve a full meal for one to two euros. The food budget is the lowest anywhere in this Asian catalogue.

What nobody tells you

Climbing onto the structure of Borobudur is a separate ticket from entry to the grounds, capped in number and at a fixed time. It is booked on the official site before you come.

Merapi, thirty kilometres away, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Sunrise excursions depend on its alert level and are cancelled without discussion.

The rainy season, November to March, drowns the sunrises over Borobudur — the main reason for many visits.

What you can visit without a tour in Yogyakarta, with the gate price.

  • Borobudur

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

The largest Buddhist temple in the world, nine platforms and two thousand six hundred reliefs.

Book the climbing slot at the same time as the ticket, not on the day: it is the only part that matters, it is capped at a few hundred people a day, and it goes first.

paid entry, with a foreign rate distinct from the Indonesian one; climbing onto the platforms is booked separately and by time slot

  • Prambanan

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

Eight tapering Hindu towers, three over forty metres, built fifty years after Borobudur.

The Ramayana ballet is performed in the open air facing the floodlit towers, May to October: a separate ticket, but the only way to see the site at night.

paid entry, with a foreign rate distinct from the Indonesian one; a combined ticket with Borobudur exists

  • Malioboro Street

    Free

The axis linking the sultan's palace to the volcano, and batik sold by the metre.

Printed batik and batik tulis, drawn by hand in wax, sit side by side at ten times the price difference: turn the piece over — a tulis has the same pattern on both sides, a print has it on one.

public street, you pay for what you buy
