The Agora was the public square of Athens: market, law courts, assemblies, and the place where Socrates argued before being tried and condemned there. It is the civic heart of the city, more so than the Acropolis, which was its sanctuary.

The Temple of Hephaestus, on the western rise, is the best-preserved Greek temple in existence: it owes its condition to being converted into a Christian church, which kept it maintained for fourteen centuries. The Stoa of Attalos, entirely rebuilt in the 1950s, houses the site museum.
