It is under restoration through the Portuguese recovery plan: occasional closures are possible until the full reopening, announced for around June 2026. Check on the day before crossing Lisbon.

The 28E tram is the longest queue in Lisbon and its pickpockets' hunting ground: the 12E does nearly the same loop with a quarter of the people. And the climb can be made free on the city's public lifts — the Chão do Loureiro one comes out on a terrace open to everybody.

First train, and start with Pena at the top: the 434 bus is empty at that hour and fills from half past nine. Travel on a Viva Viagem card loaded with zapping credit, clearly cheaper than a return bought at the counter.

Book the morning lesson: the north-westerly gets up around midday and chops the wave for the rest of the day. Wetsuit and foam board are included by the schools set up on the sand — don't hire anything separately, and buy no gear before you have tried it.
