Sintra is a damp forest on a ridge, forty minutes by train from Lisbon. The microclimate keeps the mist the Portuguese kings came up for in summer, and it explains the palaces: Pena on the summit, Quinta da Regaleira with its initiation well, and the national palace with its two conical chimneys down in the town.
You cannot do three in a day without running. Pick two, take the first train, and book Pena ahead: it sells by time slot and it fills.
