In short

A long flat island, one road, beaches following one another from north to south. Lanta draws the people who find Phuket too loud and Koh Phangan too party-minded.

Life concentrates on the west coast. The south, towards the national park, is markedly quieter and markedly less equipped.

What it really costs

Rents are among the lowest of the Thai islands, but long-term supply is limited: mostly bungalows let by the week.

Everything arrives by ferry, which pushes up groceries. Local restaurants stay very cheap.

When to go

The dry season runs November to March. From May, the monsoon closes part of the accommodation and the sea becomes too rough for boat trips.

The January high season fills the island and doubles the rates.

What nobody tells you

The connection is decent but not reliable everywhere: in the south of the island it drops regularly. A mobile plan with tethering is not a luxury.

Off season, half the businesses close and the island genuinely empties.

Visa

Short stay

Visa exemption for French citizens, extendable once on arrival.

Long stay

DTV visa for remote work, business visas depending on the structure.

  • Lanta Old Town

    must-seeFree

A village of Chinese stilt houses over the water, on the east coast.

It is the one part of the island left as it was: the west beaches are built up, the east coast is not.

the village and jetty are free

  • Mu Ko Lanta National Park

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

The island's southern tip, with a lighthouse, a beach and a jungle trail.

The macaques in the car park take anything left out, open bags included. Leave food in the scooter.

paid national park entry for foreigners, rate to be confirmed

  • Koh Rok

    Price unconfirmed

Two uninhabited islets with white sand and clear water, an hour by speedboat.

The islands close for the monsoon, May to October. The speedboat pounds: the slow boat takes two hours and makes nobody sick.

paid boat trip plus national park entry; rates depend on the operator
