In short

Cebu City is dense, chaotic and well equipped: hospitals, malls, an international airport. Around it, the island offers waterfalls, whale sharks and well-known dive sites.

Moalboal and Oslob are a few hours' drive away.

What it really costs

Condominium rents are low for the level of comfort, with a pool and a gym often included.

Urban transport is cheap but slow: Cebu's traffic is famous across the country.

When to go

January to May, dry. Typhoon season runs June to December, peaking in October and November.

Domestic flights are cancelled regularly during that stretch.

What nobody tells you

Typhoons are not theoretical: they cut power and water for days, sometimes longer.

English is spoken everywhere, which makes the country far easier to live in than its neighbours for a first long stay.

Visa

Short stay

Short exemption for French citizens, extendable on arrival.

Long stay

9(g) visa tied to a local employer.

What you can visit without a tour in Cebu, with the gate price.

  • The Moalboal sardine run

    must-seeFree

A shoal of several million sardines twenty metres from shore, visible while snorkelling.

Choose Moalboal over the Oslob whale sharks: there the animals are fed to stay, here the shoal is wild and the access is free.

access from Panagsama Beach is free; mask and snorkel are hired

  • Kawasan Falls

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

Turquoise pools stepping down through the jungle, in the south of the island.

The canyoneering route ends at these falls after three hours of jumps and swimming. Most people only see the finish, not the run.

paid site entry; canyoneering is charged separately

  • Magellan's Cross

    Free

The cross planted in 1521, when the Philippines became Christian in a single day.

The Santo Niño basilica is right next door, with the statue Magellan gave. On Fridays the queue of worshippers runs round the block.

the pavilion is open and free
