Founded in 1345, this is the most revered temple in Chiang Mai, and the busiest at Songkran, when the Phra Singh Buddha is carried through the streets in procession.
The building to look for is not the big gilded hall at the entrance but the smaller Wihan Lai Kham on the left: its inner walls carry nineteenth-century murals of everyday Lanna life — tattoos, hairstyles, markets — and they are a document as much as a painting.
Getting there
At the west end of Ratchadamnoen Road, inside the old town. All walkable from Tha Phae gate, twenty minutes.
What to bring
- Covering clothes
Rules on site
Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the door of each wihan. On Sunday evening the Ratchadamnoen walking market makes getting here very slow.
