Vegueta is the founding quarter of Las Palmas, laid out in 1478: the first European town in the Canaries, and its plan served as the model for Spanish foundations in the Americas.

Santa Ana cathedral took four centuries to build, which is why it mixes Gothic, Renaissance and neoclassical. Opposite, the Casa de Colón occupies the old governor's residence: Christopher Columbus is said to have lodged there during his 1492 stopover, while a caravel was repaired — the stopover is certain, the lodging less so.

Getting there

In the south of Las Palmas, by the sea. City buses from Las Canteras, twenty minutes; the quarter is walked.

Most of the museums close on Sunday afternoon and Monday. On Thursday evening the tapas route fills the district's bars — the best time, and the busiest.
