The Uetliberg tops out at eight hundred and seventy metres, eight hundred above the lake, and it is Zurich's mountain in the literal sense: a suburban train climbs it from the main station in twenty minutes, on an ordinary city transport ticket.
From the summit you get the lake along its whole length and the chain of the Alps behind it in clear weather. The ridge to Felsenegg is a two-hour walk, level, with a scale model of the solar system laid out along the path — the Planetenweg, one metre to a million kilometres.
Getting there
S10 train from the main station, twenty minutes, then ten minutes' climb on foot. An ordinary city ticket covers it.
What the price covers
the S10 train is charged, and covered by a Zurich transport pass; the trail and summit are free
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
In winter an inversion layer often covers the city in fog while the summit is in sunshine: that is the best time to go up. The ridge path ices over from December to February.
