William the Conqueror had the White Tower built around 1078 to hold London, and the complex grew for nine centuries: fortress, palace, armoury, menagerie, mint and prison. Anne Boleyn was executed here, and the last prisoners were held during the Second World War.
The Crown Jewels are displayed in the Jewel House, on a moving walkway that stops you lingering. The Yeoman Warders, who live on site with their families, give tours included in the ticket — and they are the best part.
