The tower was put up in two years and two months for the 1889 World's Fair, with eighteen thousand pieces of puddled iron and two and a half million rivets. It was to be dismantled after twenty years; it was its usefulness as a wireless telegraphy and then radio aerial that saved it.
It stands three hundred and thirty metres with its aerials and grows several centimetres in summer as the iron expands. It is repainted every seven years, by hand, with some sixty tonnes of paint — and its colour has changed several times since the original red.
