The CN Tower is five hundred and fifty-three metres tall and was the world's tallest free-standing structure for thirty-two years, from 1975 to 2007. It was built by the Canadian railway to solve a practical problem: Toronto's skyscrapers were blocking radio and television signals.
The glass floor, at three hundred and forty-two metres, holds the weight of fourteen hippopotamuses according to the brochure — an argument that mainly says people hesitate to step on it. The EdgeWalk, higher up, has harnessed visitors walk a metre-and-a-half external ledge, with no railing.
