Taipei 101 is five hundred and eight metres tall and was the world's tallest building from 2004 to 2010. Its form draws on a bamboo stem: eight sections of eight floors, eight being the number of prosperity in Chinese.

Its distinctive feature is visible on the 88th floor: a six-hundred-and-sixty-tonne steel sphere hung on cables, the largest tuned mass damper ever installed and the only one open to public view. It counters the sway caused by typhoons and earthquakes — Taipei is in an active seismic zone, and the tower is built two hundred metres from a fault.

Getting there

Metro red line, Taipei 101 / World Trade Center station, exit 4. The observatory entrance is on the fifth floor of the mall.

Rules on site

The lift reaches the 89th floor in thirty-seven seconds: your ears block — swallow or yawn. Haze and rain are frequent in Taipei and wipe out the view, with no refund.
