The roulottes are food trucks that set up each evening on Place Vaiete, facing Papeete harbour, from six o'clock. They pack away at closing — the square is empty again by morning.
It is the normal way to have dinner in Papeete, and by far the cheapest in a territory where restaurants are expensive. You eat raw fish, grills, chow mein inherited from Chinese immigration, and crêpes. You sit at shared benches and pay cash, in Pacific francs.
Getting there
Place Vaiete, on the Papeete waterfront, beside the ferry terminal.
Rules on site
Almost all take cash only, in Pacific francs. They only set up in the evening: the square is empty during the day, and some do not come out on Sunday.
