The Riva runs two hundred and fifty metres along the waterfront, between Diocletian's palace and the harbour. The palace's south front serves as its wall: the arcades you see behind the palms are Roman, and they originally opened straight onto the water — the emperor moored beneath his apartments.
It was paved in white marble in a contested 2007 remodelling. It is Split's drawing room: in the evening the whole city comes down for the korzo, the ritual promenade, and the terraces never empty.
Getting there
Along the harbour, at the foot of the palace. The island ferry terminal is at the eastern end.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Swimsuit
Rules on site
The Riva terraces charge for the view: the bars in the palace lanes, fifty metres away, serve the same for far less. The white marble is slippery in rain.
