The cemetery opened in 1822 in the vegetable garden of a Recollect convent, and became the necropolis of the Argentine elite: four thousand seven hundred vaults packed into narrow streets, with marble mausoleums signed by architects.

Eva Perón's grave is the Duarte family's, unobtrusive, and her body has a history of its own: taken in 1955 by the junta, hidden for sixteen years in a Milan cemetery under a false name, returned in 1971 and buried here in 1976, under an armoured slab five metres down.

Getting there

Junín 1760, in the Recoleta district. Bus from the centre, or twenty minutes on foot from Callao metro station.

Rules on site

Entry is now charged for foreign visitors and free for residents: bring cash or a card. A map is essential — Eva Perón's grave is very hard to find without one, and it is not signposted.
