The market has run since 1878 across seven hectares, and it is the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere. Part of the site is built over Melbourne's old cemetery: around nine thousand bodies still lie there, under the car park, and a redevelopment scheme was blocked for that reason.
There is the meat and fish hall, fruit and vegetables under the sheds, the deli hall with central European cheesemongers and charcutiers, and a whole shed of clothing and bric-a-brac. The summer night market, on Wednesdays, turns the site into an eating hall.
