The Prado opened in 1819 out of the Spanish royal collection, which explains its shape: it is not a survey of art but the taste of the Habsburgs and Bourbons, very rich in Spanish, Italian and Flemish painting, nearly silent elsewhere.
Three rooms justify the trip on their own: Velázquez's Las Meninas, the black paintings Goya put on the walls of his own house, and Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. There are eight thousand paintings: pick a route or you will see nothing.
