The Great Pyramid was finished around 2560 BC and remained the tallest building in the world for nearly four thousand years, until Lincoln Cathedral. It is made of about two million three hundred thousand blocks, and its sides align to true north within a twentieth of a degree.

The Sphinx is carved from a single mass of the plateau's limestone, in a quarry whose stone went into the temples. Its nose was destroyed long before Bonaparte, who is still blamed: eighteenth-century drawings already show it missing.

Getting there

On the western edge of Cairo, at Giza. Metro line 2 to Giza then a taxi, or a taxi straight from the centre.

What the price covers

access to the plateau and to the outside of the three pyramids. Sources give 540 to 700 EGP depending on the season: we quote the top of the range so that nobody arrives short of cash. Children under 12, 25 to 50 EGP, free under 6.

Rules on site

Going inside the Great Pyramid costs extra: the passage is low, hot and unventilated, and there is nothing at the end — the chamber is empty. Camel touts quote one price to get on and another to get off: agree the total in writing, or decline.
