The building was completed in 1902, two hundred and sixty-eight metres long, with six hundred and ninety-one rooms. Its dome reaches ninety-six metres, like that of St Stephen's Basilica: the number refers to 896, when the Magyars arrived, and no building in the city was to exceed it.

The Hungarian Holy Crown is displayed under the dome, under permanent guard. The interior can only be seen on an escorted tour, by time slot, in a language chosen when booking.

Getting there

Metro line 2, Kossuth Lajos tér station, right outside. The ticket office is in the underground visitor centre on the north side of the square.

Hours

May to October, 8am – 6pm; November to March, 8am – 4pm; in April, 8am – 4pm Monday to Thursday and 8am – 6pm Friday to Sunday. The tour lasts three quarters of an hour
