Oia sits on the north-west rim of the caldera, a hundred and fifty metres above the water. The houses are cut into soft volcanic rock — they were sailors' dwellings, enlarged by digging rather than building.
The sunset is watched from the ruins of the Venetian castle at the tip of the village, and the spot fills up an hour and a half beforehand. The blue domes belong to Orthodox churches, and most stand on private property: photograph them from the street, not from the terraces.
Getting there
Bus from Fira, half an hour, frequent departures. The last bus back after sunset is mobbed: plan a taxi or wait it out.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The lanes are narrow and the village is saturated on cruise-ship days: check the liner calendar. Many photogenic terraces are private property, with explicit no-entry signs.
