The house was Karen Blixen's from 1917 to 1931, while she ran a four-thousand-hectare coffee plantation at the foot of the Ngong hills. The plantation failed — the land was too high for coffee — and she went back to Denmark ruined, where she wrote Out of Africa under the name Isak Dinesen.
Denmark gave the house to Kenya at independence in 1963. It is furnished partly with original pieces and partly with props from the 1985 film, which the guided tour points out. The residential district around it carries her first name.
Getting there

The visit is guided only and the visitor rate differs from the resident rate. The giraffe centre and the elephant orphanage are in the same area: the three combine in one day, but the orphanage opens for only one hour a day.
