The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke market is the central market of Victoria, capital of the Seychelles and one of the smallest capitals in the world — the town holds around twenty-six thousand people.
It reflects Seychellois creole mixing: offshore fish sold whole on concrete slabs, tropical fruit, and above all spices — cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and the creole curry blend. It opens early and empties in the early afternoon; Saturday morning is the busiest day, and the only one on which you really see the town.
Getting there
Market Street, in central Victoria on Mahé. The whole centre is walkable.
Hours
Mornings, Monday to Saturday; Saturday is the big day
Rules on site
The market empties in the early afternoon and closes on Sunday. Spice prices start high for visitors: compare two or three stalls before buying vanilla.
