Bang Ian sets up in the late afternoon along a few hundred metres in modern Ayutthaya. It is not a tourist market: local people do their evening shopping here and carry dinner home in bags.
You find central Thai dishes — boat noodles, salt-grilled fish, sweet roti, and the boat noodle served in tiny bowls that you stack up to work out the bill. Prices are those of a provincial town, unrelated to Bangkok's.
Getting there
Bang Ian road, in the modern centre east of the historical park. Ten minutes by bicycle from the temples.
Rules on site
Almost nobody takes cards and the ATMs are on the main avenue: bring cash in small notes.
