The lake fills the Valley of the Ten Peaks at one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five metres, and its colour comes from the same rock flour as Lake Louise. It only holds water from mid-June, once the melt has filled it.
The postcard view is taken from the Rockpile, a ten-minute climb up the moraine to the right of the car park: it is the landscape that appeared on the Canadian twenty-dollar note. The road has been closed to all private vehicles since 2023.
Getting there
Parks Canada shuttle or a private shuttle only: the road has been closed to private cars since 2023, including for drop-offs.
What the price covers
daily national park admission, adult 18 to 64. The Parks Canada shuttle, mandatory here, costs $12.75 more per adult, with a $3.50 online booking fee.
Rules on site
No private vehicle reaches the lake: the shuttle is booked online, and sunrise slots go weeks ahead. The road is closed from October to early June by snow.
