Lac Blanc sits at two thousand three hundred and fifty-two metres, on the Aiguilles Rouges side — that is, facing the Mont Blanc massif, and that is the whole point: you only see a range properly from the other side of the valley.
In calm weather the lake reflects the Aiguille Verte, the Drus and the whole of Mont Blanc. You climb to it from the Index or Flégère lifts in an hour and a half on rocky path, with ladders near the top. The lake is frozen and under snow until June.
Getting there
Flégère gondola from Les Praz, then an hour and a half of path. Walking the whole way from the valley takes three hours.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The path stays under snow until June and slippery snowfields linger late: check conditions before setting off. The lifts close in the mid-afternoon — note the time of the last one down.
