To confirm
The memorial stands on the old Polo Ground racecourse, on the exact spot where Nkrumah declared Ghana's independence on 6 March 1957 — the first in sub-Saharan Africa.
The mausoleum is Italian marble, shaped like a felled tree: Nkrumah died in exile, and the monument speaks of work cut short. In front of it, his statue had been beheaded in the 1966 coup; it was re-erected as it was, and the recovered head is displayed separately.
