Kings Park covers four hundred hectares above the Swan River, making it one of the largest urban parks in the world — bigger than Central Park. Two thirds of it is native bush that has never been cleared, in the middle of the city.
The site is an important Aboriginal place, Kaarta Gar-up, and it is also the state war memorial. In September and October the botanic garden shows the wildflowers of Western Australia: the region has around twelve thousand species, half of which exist nowhere else.
Getting there
On the western edge of central Perth. Bus 935 from Elizabeth Quay, or a twenty-minute climb on foot up Jacob's Ladder.
What to bring
- Swimsuit
- Cap
- Sunscreen
Rules on site
The park is vast: work out your section — lookout, botanic garden, canopy walkway — before going in. The Western Australian sun is the harshest in the country: hat and sunscreen are not optional.
